THE RINKS.
The Columbia was well patronised last night to witness an amusing sack race, which was won by R. M'Donald. The final heat of the Press race will be decided tonight. The fancy dress carnival at the Palace was again crowded to excess last night. In addition to those already noticed, a number of new characters were to be seen, notably a policeman in company with a nun, and a well " made up " female. The march was carried out even more successfully than on the previous evening. The Engineers' Band played 'The Royalties' march, and some of Mr Benjamin's newest compositions, including ' Heel and toe," a schottische, and a polka; whilst twelve males voices Bang 'Heel and toe,' which makes an effective chorus. A deal of amusement was found in the antics and comicalities of some of the characters represented. The evening's proceedings were concluded by a dance. The Oriental Rink, Duke street, was well patronised last night, when the final of the North-east Valley Footballers' Two-mile Handicap was run off. King (quarter lap) was first, Johnson (scratch) second, and Spencer third.
