LARRIKINISM.
TO THK EDITOR. Sib,—" New Chum" is surprised that the authorities do not keep a sharper look-out on the larrikin element flourishing in our midst. When your correspondent is a little more acquainted with the Colony he will come to the conclusion that larrikinism is a State institution, held as sacred as the covenant, and get rued to it. Were he to doubt my word, let him try to box the ears of any hoodlum he catches playing at " larrikin tricks." On the Continent he would receive the warmest thanks of the parent for so doing ; here he would be summoned and heavily fined for daring to take the law into his own hands. When there is one constable for every 500 miscreants the authorities cannot reasonably be made responsible for the mischief they may do. While waiting for a more civilised race of cads, the City Council ought to place in the Botanical Gardens the following notice, which I have seen in most of the public places of Switzerland : being public property, is placed under the protection of every citizen." —I am, etc., Cat o' Nine Tails.
