It is interesting to compare the figures for some years previous to the census of 1864. In 1851, the total population was 25,707. In 1858 it had increased to 59,413, being an increase in numbers during seven years amoun ing to 32,706 persons, or 122.46 per cent. In 1861 the total population, exclusive of Maoiis, was 99,021, being an increase, as compared with 1858, of 39,608, or 39.99 per cent. The increase between 1874 and the present census is, as our table shows, 114,657, or nearly three times as much as between 1871 and 1874.
