ROSLYN ROADS.

To the Editor. Sir, —Were it not for the wonderful powers of misconstruction or misapprehension evinced by "Ratepayer" and " William Todd " of Roslyn, in their communications to your columns, I should be puzzled to know how the latter person, or his friends (save the mark*, could bo interpret the c!o»ing sentence of my last letter, in which I stated that I would leave "Ratepayer" to ''attend to his employer's business," as to suppose it to mean that William Todd neglects his employer's business. Ido not even know who are the employers of Mr Wm, Todd, but if the William Todd is he of that ilk of whom I have heard in connection with local matters in Roslyn, I have much pleasure in stating that I am ready at' any time to certify that I believe him to be quite incapable of neglecting anybody's business. This ought to satisfy your correspondent.

I stated in my last that in my ©pinion there exists in Roslyn a scarcity of eligible candidates for seats in the Council. Mr Todd says : "It is a pity there are so few eligible persons in the district "—a very different thing. That a scarcity of eligible candidates exists cannot be doubted if Mr Todd's word is to be relied or, for a very ahort time has elapsed since he—when heading a deputation whioh waited npon the Roslyn Council—stated that the ward in which he resided was "represented by two donkeys and a lit<h one," for making which statement Mr Todd was very properly rebnked by the Mayon There are many eligible persons in the borough who refuse to be _ nominated to fill positions in which, if elected, the more faith fully and efficiently they perform the dnties pertaining thereto the more they are subjected to abuse from the meddlesome busybodies to whom I alluded in general terms in my last communication. I shall not trouble you further in reference to matters which, tbongh they may possess some little local interest, cannot have any to general readers.—l am, &0., Waverly. Dunedin, June 1.
