VITAL STATISTICS.

. The returns showing,the.vital statistics for April are as follows -

j The births were 40 less than in March. The deaths were 42 Jess in number than the I deaths in March. • f the deaths, males conj tnbuted 51 and females 52 ; 32 of the deaths i wore of children under 5 years of agfs, being I SS 55 per cent, of the whole number} 21 of i these were of children under 1 year of age. i There were 3 deaths of persons of 65 years ;of age and over; all of were 1 male; 1 aged 68 died at Auckland, lof 76 j at Wellington, and 1 of 65 at Nelson. Of the ! Wellington deaths, 4 were from zymotic , diseases, 7 from conatitutional caimes, 6 from local diseases, o from develQpmentwdiseasea. 1 ! met with a violent death, amT the,.‘cause of death of one is not specified., Scsdatina and typhoid fever sqem to have been the prevailing diseases of .the,-month,4hqjilgh. the Colony* Nine deaths in all are attributed to the first, s. being at Hokitika, and 4in Dunedin. Typhoid fever proved fatal in 5 cases, I at Auckland, 2 at the Thames, 1 in I Wellington, -and 1 in Christchurch. The total of deaths for the last, month is 22 less than the total for- April of IS7G. Against 23 deaths from zymoli • diseases in Awil, .1877 I the same month of the previous year showe<{ ; 36. In April, 1870, there were 105 deatha ‘ in the borbnghs. ■
