Dunedin The object of this Company is to work a (Coalmining lease of 800 acres, situated at Waimangaroa Basin, Mount Rochfort, near Westport. The ground comprised in this lease has been very carefully selected from three prospecting areas of 5,000 acres, and about L1,C;00 has been expend- d in obtaining the lease, prospecting, surveys, and other works necessary to prove <he mine. In reference to this Jesse, Mr R. B. Dennlston, Government Coal Viewer, in his evidence given before the Royal Commission at Westport, says: —“ The total tonnage in this lease, including the east and west elopes, in about a,600 000 tons, the coal beiog of the best quality.”

* he xv port of analysis of coil from this part sf the fieid at \ T . oolwich Dockyard shows that it is equal to the best nor hj of hj ugland coal for steam purposes (vide Admiralty report on Kelson coal presented to Nelson Provincial Council, March 16th, 1866.) The railway is completed and open for traffic from Westport to Waim ingaroa, ai;d the Wellington Coal Company have made a branch line of one mile five chains in length up the river, and from this point it is proposed to make a * ram way to the coal, about two miles in length. The Government coal waggons will be loaded at end of Tramway line, thence forwarded over Government railway to Westport, •where there is now building railway wharf, station, si ling’, and a large viaduct and coal staiths, from which the cjal will be shipped direct into the ye sels. The port of Westport off ex s great facilities for shipping, the average depth of water of the bar bring 12ft to loft; and it is expected that when the Protective Works, now in course of 'construction, are completed, the depth will be increased to from 18ft to 20ft. By ear ful computation it has been estimated that the cost of opening up and connecting the mine with the Government railway, including ail necessary plant, will not exceed L 15,000, and further, the coal can be shipped free on board at Westport at 8s per ton. The terras of the lease will compel the Company to have the mine in working order early in 1878, co that shareholders may rely on having returns for their money within twelve mouths.
