THE 'GUARDIAN'S' SPECIAL.
The 'Post's' reporter who did tfce Wanaka trip writes—"We had Borne We3t Coast papers sent off to us at Hokitika. You can judge of the surprise of those interested on coming across an extract from a letter of the correspondent of the 'Otago Guardian/ wherein was described a number of hairbreadth escapes from all sorts of dangers by different people, as well as some extraordinary antics on the part of others, such as 'lashing the deck with their backs' (whatever that meant) and other absurdities. Perhaps the writer in question had been accustomed to follow the example set him by his brethren with the long ears, and after a loud bray amuse' himself by lashing the ground with his back with feet in *ir. An impromptu meeting was immediately held to consider the matter. The discussion, as you may well imagine, was of a very angry nature. Intimately, after u great many suggestions as to what ought to be done with the delinquent, such as sending him aloft for twentyrfour hours, washing him down with the hose, which, by-the-bye, would have very much improved his personal appearance; towing him at the stem of the steamer for about a mile—as the sharks and other fish are rather dainty about there, aud won't touch pork it was decided that he should be sent to Coventiy. I was very nearly writing 'quarantine.' He was kept there for a few days, and never afterwards was on the same friendly footing with his fellow passengers."
