VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
A competition for the West Taieri Rifle Company's silver medal took place at the company's range on Saturday. The weather was intensely hot, and the light so glaring that sighting was very difficult. The ranee is badly situated, as, being at the foot of a spur, the litht in the afternoon, as the sun is declining, shines along the barrel in a manner that no shading can remedy. This w especially' noticeable in the short days. Inere could be a much better range further down, but as the Dunstan road runs above it, there would be a difficulty in getting the site. There might be some little risk from high shooting, but this is more imaginary than real. There was but little wind on "W- Th e ranges were-200, 400, 500, and 600 yards ; any position. Subjoined are the scores :-^
The return match between the Queenstown, Arrow, and Cromwell Rifles resulted m a victory for the latter, who made 668 points, against Arrow's 500, and Cromwell's 4bU.
