Theft. —Frances Fincher, alias Quinnley, was charged by Constable Bain with stealing, on May 26, from the Munster Arms Hotel, Walker street, three silver medals, of the value of 255, the property of James M'Kean.—Prisoner pleaded guilty, and in answer to the who wished to know the facts Inspector Mallard said it was an ordinary case of theft, and an impudent one to boot. The three medals belonging to M'Kean—an old soldierhad been stolen by prisoner, who pawned them, and then denied all knowledge of the matter.— Prisoner was sent to gaol for two months, with hard labor, Mr Ward saying ; Pawnbrokers ought to know better than receive medals, bebecause they are actually gratuities given by the Queen to the people, and they ought to be frotected in every way from being dealt with.— nspector Mallard said that in the service at Home, any person taking such medals would be punished; and Mr Ward replied that there special provision of that kind was made, but he could not say whether it was applicable here. Pawnbrokers ought to be warned against receiving medals.—The Bench ordered the medals to be detained by the police till M'Kean should be found, and that they should then be restored to him. [Two of the medals were awarded to M'Kean when he was in the 78th Horse Guards as a reward of bravery for services in Persia and at the Relief of Lucknow, the other was.a good conduct medal and presented to him when in the 83rd ]
