William Doherty was brought up on remand with stealing a coat of the value of L 3 10s, from the Albion Hotel, the property of Jamei Stirling. , t , . . ’ James Stirling said he lost Ins coat on Tuesday last. It was taken off a nail in the hedroqm of the Albion Hotel, which he usually occupied. He never had seen the pr - saner before, and identified the coat produced as bis own, though the name in the collar had been erased. Mr Davis, landlord of the Albion Hotel, said the last witncis was stopping with him. The prisoner came one day to the! Albion and a-ked him to give him a bed f.-r two horns, and he told him he might have bed 16. He did not see him go away in the afternoon, but soon after he was told that the coat, which had been in Stirling’s room, was missing. . , , T. Gu!ami said he was in Demers shop the other dav, when he saw prisoner trying to sell a coat, and on asking him what he wanted for it, he said 10s. Witne-s replied he Would buy it, hut would only then five ss, offering to fe‘ch the r st. Prisoner Slid “give in ii the ss, I want a drink, and if you give me 3® more at once, we wil. cry quits.” Prisomr was the man whom he bought tbs coat off, and he said he purchased it in Napier. It had the name James Stirling on it when he first saw it. Prisoner denied ever having seen witness, or knowing anything about the coat. His Worship said he had not the slightest doubt prisoner was the man who stole the coat, and he would sentence him to hard labor for three calendar months.
