THE NEED FOR COAL
BRITISH INDUSTRIALISTS' CO-OPERATION
Rec. 9 a.m. LONDON, August 24. Outlining his attitude to nationalisation of mines, the industrialist Sir Francis Joseph, in a letter to the North Staffordshire Colliery Owners' Association, said that although he believes free enterprise can serve the country best, he will endeavour to make nationalisation of mines effective, even though such a policy may be against his own personal interests. "The country desperately needs coal," he said. "We must demonstrate that we are out to help. No other policy is possible, but the miners' leaders must also help the nation by doing their utmost to get the men to attend work regularly and do a full week's work."
