HIGHER SUBSIDY

PAYMENT TO BUTCHERS

An increase from Is 3d to Is 7d per 20s worth of meat ration coupons has been granted in the subsidy payable to retail butchers as compensation lor the recent increase in the export meat schedules. The Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Nash) said last night that the increase had been decided on after consideration of additional evidence.

When export meat prices were increased by agreement with the British Government, retail prices in New Zealand remained at the stabilised level, butchers being paid a subsidy to meet increased wholesale costs based on export parity. Representations were subsequently made by the butchers that the subsidy was inadequate, and, in addition, that the further reduction in the meat ration had added to their costs. .
