CHESS

Messrs. Wade, Gyles, Steele and Kelling, of the Wellington Chess Club, returned on Tuesday, having greatly enjoyed the King's birthday weekend in Christchurch, where they played two matches under the auspices of the Canterbury Chess Club.. In the first contest they .were pitted against Messrs. M. Stewart, R. J. Colthart, L. J Mitchell, and E. Dalton respectively, the score being-2J to li. in tha visitors favour A well-contested game at board 1 (Wade v. Stewart) ended in a draw The tally was 2-2 in the second match, when the local club was represented by Messrs. H. R. Abbott, H. J. Armstrong, Mrs. Abbott, and the Rev. C. Flood. Mr. Abbott, who has not taken "part in a congress since ne held the New Zealand championship eight years ago, was in fine form, and a well conducted attack enabled him to win a minor piece and score a meritorious win at board 1. Messrs. Steele and Kelling again notched wins the total scores being Wellington C.C. A_, Canterbury C.C. 3J. The visitors showed up well in a lightning tourney at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abbott, who tendered a very enjoyable social on the free evening. The opportunity was taken by the president of the Canterbury Chess Club, Miss A. WellardKing, to present a scroll, autograph-ed - by the members of the club, to Mr. Kelling in honour of his 80th birthday. Mr. Wade expressed the thanks of the visitors for the kindnesses that were j shown them.
