MILLIONTH MILE
RED CROSS TRANSPORT ,
CORPS
. During a recent conference of the Transport Council of the New Zealand Red Cross V.A.D. Organisation a telegram was received from the, Auckland Centre intimating that the Transport Corps there had passed its millionth mile in voluntary transport on April 16. By resolution of the delegates attending the meeting a telegram was sent extending warmest congratulations on this achievement. Throughout the war transport units of the Red Cross have had a fine record of service. Earlier in the year the Wellington Transport Unit, which initiated the service in the Dominion, passed its millionth mile. OWN CARS AND UNIFORMS. Women in these units—numbering approximately 600—have not only' to provide their own car and uniforms, but maintain a service at a high level of efficiency. Since coming into operation members of the units have been trained at engineering classes and have qualified by examination with the New Zealand Division of the Institution of Automotive Engineers. Apart from mastering knowledge in the maintenance and running repairs of their own cars, they have gained their certificates for the driving of heavy lorries. Their work throughout has been the transportation of the sick and wounded and co-oper-ating generally with the Army in discharging this special feature of work.
During a recent visit of evacuees from Malaya and the Philippines 20 cars of the Wellington Unit were provided for transport of these personnel. Outings and picnics were also organised.
The object of the society is to consolidate this important activity so that it may play 'an important part with other branches of Red Cross organisation in the post-war years.
