BETTING IN USA.

■ ■ ,< • NEW FIELD OF ACTIVITY 7 A. With the cancellation of racing in the States of America bookmakers ;have transferred their activities ta college sports and athletics. The coach of the University of Kansas basketball teams said that, Lexington had the biggest collejge and high school gambling section in the nation, and that on Saturdays handled as much as 500,000 dollars on college football games. This booking agency had telephone lines toSt. Louis,' New York, Chicago, and New Orleans, and with a monthly telephone bill between 2000 and 3000 dollars they could get places quicker than an army general. The position, the coach said, was fast becoming worse. Renewals. —Trainers, jockeys, apprentice jockeys, and amateur riders are reminded that applications for the renewal of licences must be made to their district committees on, or before May 31. Amended.—The programme for the "Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting gave the distance of the Century Hurdles as about two miles and half a furlong, whereas it is about two miles and one furlong. Originally the distance of the race was two miles and 194 yards, but before returning to 'its home course the club made alterations to its track, hence the amendment -..'■■ New Secretary—Mr/J. A. McDonell, who has been secretary of the Ash-hurst-Pohangina Racing Club for some years, has been appointed secretary of the Manawatu Racing Club. Transferred.—With the Hawke's Bay tracks being on the hard side, Mrs. L. Campbell intends taking Khurja to Awapuni to be prepared for the winter activities. Epping has gone into A. W. McDonald's stable at the same centre, and Indian Sun bhas been sent through to Hawera. Stakes Increased —The Egmont Racing Club has made substantial, - increases in the- stake-money for its . , Winter Meeting. The Egmont Steeplechase, Mcßae Handicap, and Champion Hack Plate have all been raised, from £300 to £400. Entries close on Monday. Sale Reported.—lt is reported from Hawke's Bay that Lotto; who has been showing promise in the role of hurdler, has changed hands at a good figure. It is some time since the Croupier gelding won, but he should make amends in the role of jumper. Importation.—Down to have her first race at Washdyke today was Scottish Rose, an English-bred filly ■who was imported to this country, as was her dam,. Haltwhistle (Cameroman ' —Hallow, by Bosworth), who was bought at the late Lord Furness's re-cord-breaking sale. Haltwhistle was accompanied by a filly foal by Foxhunter (noted son of Foxlaw), but her elder progeny, who is now known as Scottish Rose,' preceded Tier. The latter is by Khan Bahadur, a fullbrother to the Derby winner Mahmoud, and half-brother to Pheroshah. Prior to leaving England Haltwhistle •was served by the Derby winner Felstead. b. ■■ x . ' . , ■ , -Proved "Useful.—Po-Huka, an aged gelding by Nightly from Toque, who was owned by Mr. W. Cooper, of Masterton, died recently from an acute attack of laryngitis. He had been spelling, but had been, brought in with a view to resuming work. To the Fore.—All three placed horses in the hurdle race at Hastings last Saturday, Taane Pango,-Renascor, ' • and Pompit, are trained at Awapuni. This is but another indication ..that that training centre will be fittingly represented once again this winter in the jumping branch. Last season Taane Pango won twice oyer the battens, at Woodville and Ellerslie, his northern success coming in the New Year Hurdles, 2 miles, but he was twice second on the same trip, those placings coming in the Grafton Hurdles, li miles, and the Auckland Hurdles, If miles. However, #as he had had only one previous outing this term, and that was whenvhe ran third to Severity and First Edition in the Ladies' Handicap at Waipukurau, students of form were hardly prepared for the sharp improvement. Renascor had showed a lot of promise on the opening day, and the indications are that his turn is not far off. Speedy Lines.-^-As a two-year-old Dawning Light won the Woodville Nursery and the Novice Handicap at Trentham, but she hardly fulfilled expectations later in her career. Since going to the stud she produced twice to Vermeer, and in 1943 she dropped a filly by Nazami. This member of the family will race as Indian Dawn. Bred as she is, Indian Dawn should be speedy. First Foal.—The name of Regal Son has been claimed for the first foal of the Lackham mare Mittie, the dam having been a daughter of that good mare Horomea. A colt, Regal Son is owned,by the Trentham trainer W. • H. Hume.
