MAGISTRATE'S COURT

The following cases were heard before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate s Court yesterday. Arthur Francis Stevens, fitter, 19, admitted a charge of committing mischief at Featherston last October. It was Stated that he and another man had been to a dance and, after wheeling each other round a paddock in a wheelbarrow, had thrown it in the school baths. They had also thrown in the baths a number of desks which had been stored in a shed and had broken the spring board. The other man had been dealt with. He was fined £2 and ordered to pay his share of the damage.

Frank Hailwood, ' motor driver, 19, admitted the theft of 10s from the purse of the. owner of a flower shop, by whom he was sometimes employed, and was admitted to probation for 12 months.

Noel Ronald Ward, 20, a reservist called up for military service, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to report as ordered by the military authorities and was sentenced to a month's imprisonment with hard labour. It was stated that an appeal on the grounds of conscientious objection had been dismissed.

Kathleen Scott, milk bar attendant. 25, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully entering a Wellington wharf and was fined £2 and costs.

Hugh Campbell Sim, apprentice fitter and turner, 22, pleaded not guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour in a fish and chip shop at Kaiwarra, but after the hearing of evidence he was convicted and fined £1. MAN-POWER BREACHES. The following cases, for breaches of the Man-power Regulations, were heard before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M.: : Vlademer Bengula, restaurant proprietor, was fined £5 and costs on each of six charges of employing persons at the Embassy Cafe without the permission of the District Man-power Officer.

~:•■ Patrick Dennis McCarthy, seaman, 42 (Mr. A. B. Sievwright) pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to take up employment at the Wellington Patent Slip when directed to do so, but after the hearing of evidence he was convicted and fined £3 and costs.
