ELECTIONS IN FRANCE
WOMEN'S FIRST VOTE
An official communique from the French Delegation in New Zealand states: "The election of municipal bodies will take place in metropolitan France on Sunday, April 29. Twentyfour millions of French people, out of which 14,000,000 are women, will vote in some 38,014 towns and boroughs. Women in France will be voting for the first time. The election of Conseils Generaux (county councils) will take place in May and June. It is the French Government's will that democratic institutions in France should operate as soon as possible, and for that reason they find it inexpedient to postpone these elections until the return from Germany of all French prisoners and deportees, which may take some time yet. The elections of members of Parliament will take place after the war, when all the French soldiers and prisoners are back in France."
The Fire Brigade was called last night to a fire in a small motor-car parked in Wellington Terrace. Bucket pumps Were used and not much damage was caused.
Mr. F. S. Hewer has been re-elected chairman of the Lower Hutt Pire Board.
