ASSAULT ON OKINAWA

HIGH GROUND CAPTURED

Rec. 9 a.m. WASHINGTON, April 26. Admiral Nimitz's communique today says: "Troops of the 24th Army Corps moved forward and secured positions on high ground west of Urasoe and Mura. Batt|eships and cruisers continued to give close support. The ship's guns destroyed a number of batteries, emplacements, structures, and caves. Aircraft from carriers and Marine Corps' planes attacked enemy installations in the southern sector of Okinawa Island.

"In the early hours today, a few enemy aircraft approached our forces around Okinawa. One was shot down.

"Yesterday, carrier aircraft continued their neutralising attacks against the airfields and installations on the Saki Shima group. Today search aircraft strafed and sank a number of fishing craft, a small picket boat, and a torpedo boat, and damaged a number of small craft east of Kyushu. "Helldivers struck at the Yap airfield. Fighters bombed targets in the Palaus. Dive-bombers continued their neutralising attack on the Marshalls. Yesterday, search privateers bombed fuel, ammunition, and storage areas on Wake Island."
