FUTURE OF BRITAIN
Rec. 9 a.m. RUGBY, April 26. In the House of Commons Mr. E. Shmwell (Labour) said that he found the Budget exciting, because the Chancellor of the Exchequer had directed attention to the economic future of the country The Chancellor had warned them of the grave dangers that were ahead and that there were many problems likely to confront the nation. It was a little difficult to reconcile that warning with the note of lofty ultra- ? pt"?fusm disclosed in the speech of Lord Woolton, who said they were going to run into such a period of prosperity as they had never dreamed or.
The Financial Secretary to the treasury had said yesterday that there would be controls for the next- four years. How members of the Government could reconcile that emphatic declaration with the utterances of the chairS S-$ c Conservative Party, and. indeed, the utterances of the Prime Minister at the Conservative Party Se^ cii cc' which were> no doubt, intended tor,window-dressing purposes, it was difficult to explain.—BO.W.
