ESCAPED PRISONER

EXTRA 18 MONTHS

On January 9 Francis Rui Gay, labourer, 22, escaped with another prisoner from Waikune Prison, where he was serving a sentence of two years' imprisonment imposed last September by the Court at Napier. He committed a number of offences during the time he was at liberty, until he was arrested by the Wellington police earlier this month. Today in . the Magistrate's Court Detective-Sergeant E. H. Compton gave a brief outline of Gay's activities when he appeared before Mr. J. L, Stout, S.M. The story was told in the charges against the accused. Gay was first charged with being an incorrigible rogue in that he escaped from Waikune Prison on January 9. He was also charged with converting a car at National Park on January 19; with stealing an Air Force uniform at Te Awamutu on January 20; with stealing £10 10s, four American coins, a signet ring, a pair of shoes, and a watch at Oringi on January 27; with stealing a bicycle at Napier on January 28; with converting a car at Wellington on January 29, and with stealing a jug, hat, overcoat, scarf, pullover, and six handkerchiefs at Wellington on the same day. Gay pleaded guilty to all the charges. When asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say he replied, "No, thank you."

On the charge of being an incorrigible rogue he was sentenced to 18 months' hard labour, to be served at the expiry of his present sentence. On the other charges he was convicted and discharged.

Another man, Norman Charles -Williams, labourer, 58, was also charged with the last two offences preferred against Gay, namely the conversion of the car at Wellington on January 29 and the theft of articles on the same day. He pleaded not guilty to them and also to a further charge of theft of a bottle of powder perfume valued at £4 9s, the property of Unity Drugs, Ltd. Following the hearing of evidence he was convicted and sentenced to a month's imprisonment on each of the first two charges and three months on the last, the sentences to be cumulative.
