POLISH FORCES
NEW LEADER APPOINTED
Rec. 12.30 p.m. LONDON, February 26. The Polish Government in London has announced that General Anders, the Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Second Corps in Italy, has been appointed Commander-in-chief of the Polish Armed Forces. The Press Association's diplomatic correspondent says that official circles in London state that the appointment was made without the approval of the British Government, which was not consulted, and therefore took no responsibility. General Anders simultaneously issued an Order of the Day declaring that he was assuming command at the direst hour, in Poland's history. "With our standards covered with glory we are facing the greatest tragedy of our nation," he said. "The eyes of Poles scattered, throughout the world, and particularly our countrymen in the martyred homeland, are hopefully directed upon us. They know we shall continue our soldierly path in accordance with our oath under a President who is the lawful representative of the sovereignty of the Polish Republic and under the directions of our lawful Government."
