LOSS IN CROPS

CEREALS AND SMALL SEEDS P.A. DUNEDIN, February 23. Flood damage to both cereal and small seed crops will represent a loss of. many hundreds of thousands of pounds to the farming community, and ultimately to the Dominion as a whole in the loss of overseas funds received through the export of these lines. All are in keen demand overseas. Given favourable weather for the next few weeks most of the cereal crops in stock or still uncut should, be saved, but quantity and quality will be adversely affected. Crops flattened by wind and rain, however, it will not be possible to save.

The bulk of ryegrass crops not safely harvested may now be considered a total loss in the area from the Ashburton River to the Waitaki River. Extensive damage has also been done to' these crops in North Otago, Otago, apid Southland, where they are still in the paddock. The 'only crops from which a reasonable return may still be .expected are cowgrass, Montgomery, red clover, and browntop.
