APPRAISAL OF LOSS

An official party left Wellington by air today for the purpose of appraising the extent of the loss suffered by the farmers of Canterbury as a result of the floods and estimating what relief is required. It comprised the Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Roberts), the Director of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. J. W. Smith, the Commissioner of Supply Mr. F. R. Picot, who will see that stores and goods are available in the areas suffering from floods, and an officer of the Treasury. The Minister of Works (Mr. Semple) is already in the flooded area, and yesterday he visited Ashburton and Temuka. The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) had a consultation yesterday afternoon with three Canterbury members of Parliament who were in Wellington, Mr. Morgan Williams (Kaiapoi), Mr. Acland (Temuka), and Mr. Gillespie (Hurunui), on the question of the flood damage. These members, who left for the south last night, are to meet Mr. Semple in Christchurch today.
