RUSSIANS REPORT PROGRESS
LONDON, February 23. Two authoritative Russian newspapers place the Red Army further inside Germany than has been hitherto disclosed by any Russian communique. "Pravda" reports that Marshal Zhukov is 34 miles from Berlin, "Red Star" says Marshal Koniev has reached Saxony. These announcements have encouraged hope in Moscow that unusually good news will be announced in Marshal Stalin's next Order of the Day.
The correspondent in Moscow of the Associated Press of Great Britain, in a late dispatch stated that the struggle for the west bank of the Neisse River is mounting in intensity; Russian long-range batteries are laying down a terrific barrage from Kottbus to Forst. Marshal Koniev's troops are less than 12 miles from Kottbus. The Red Air Force today went into action against the German reserves west of the Neisse River line guarding the south-eastern approaches to Berlin. Russian engineers moved up to bridge the river for the main body of Koniev's troops. "NARROW FOOTING" WON. The German news agency reports that the Russians already hold a narrow footing west of the river, but there is no confirmation of this so far jfrom Russian sources. A correspondent in Moscow says the Neisse River fighting holds the attention of all Russia. It is outstanding among the hard battles from the Baltic to the Danube, with which the Red Army is grimly celebrating its twenty-seventh anniversary. Marshal Koniev is using artillery
