VALIANT GURKHA
AWARDED VICTORIA CROSS
RUGBY, February 22. The Victoria Cross has been awarded posthumously to Rifleman Thaman Gurung, of the Fifth Gurkha Rifles, Frontier Force, Indian Army.
The citation stated, that it was undoubtedly due to Rifleman Gurung's superb gallantry and his sacrifice of his blife that his platoon was able to withdraw frofh an extremely difficult position without greater casualties and that the very valuable information brought back by the platoon resulted in.the subsequent capture of an important objective.
In Italy, in November, 1944, a fighting patrol, in which Rifleman Gurung was a scout, was ordered to - reconnoitre Monte San Bartolo, the objective of a future attack. Gurung reached the summit of the enemy position and by drawing the enemy • fire enabled his platoon both to reach the summit and subsequently withdraw. He was killed while standing on the summit in full view of the enemy and firing at the German positions.— 8.0. W. .___
