STATE COMPETITION

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

Government competition in the. sale of electrical appliances was raised by Mr. W. H. Gillespie, M.P. for Hurunui, when evidence was being given to the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government yesterday afternoon by the Public Works Department. He asked how far the Department intended to compete with power boards in the sale of appliances, and Mr. G. H. Wakelin, who represented the Department, said the Department had no desire to enter into competition. The Department, however was the sole supplier of electrical energy in certain cases, and in those cases it was convenient for consumers to get their appliances from their supply authority. In reply to Mr. W. J. Poison (Stratford), who said the State had taken authority last session to enter into competition, Mr. Wakelin said that was only where the State was the sole supplier of electricity.

Mr. Broadfoot said the legislation did not say that. Mr. Poison said that in face of the blanket clause in the legislation passed last session, it was no use telling him there was no intention of the State intending to enter into competition. ■ " •
