LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

SALARIES AND COSTS Sir, —I am a Post and Telegraph employee and am in receipt of the same salary as I received before the war, except for a £13 per annum cost of living allowance which is subject to the 2s 6d in the pound deduction. Now if I want a suit, a pair of boots, or any other article of clothing, I have got to pay 50 to 100 per cent, more than-the pre-war price. For foodstuffs I have to pay a similar increase. If I want any services from tradesmen I have to pay as much as 200 per cent, more than pre-war charges. How would it be if I said to the suppliers of goods and services: Here is the pre-war price. Take it or leave it. You are the public, so why should you charge me wartime prices when you only pay me pre-war salary? The only fair thing for the Government is to give us a decent cost of living allowance, say, £50 per annum, the same as the Reform Government gave us last war.— I am, etc., EQUALITY.
