REBIRTH OF ITALY
ALLIES TO ASSIST
PLACE AMONG UNITED NATIONS
Rec. 11 a.m,
RUGBY, September 26,
After the Quebec conference Mr. Churchill and President Roosevelt held further discussions at Hyde Park, the President's residence, on subjects with post-war policies in Europe. The result of these discussions cannot be disclosed at this time, for strategic and military reasons, and pending their consideration by the other Allies. Present problems in Italy also came under discussion, and Mr. Churchill and the President have issued a statement on this subject.
It says that the Italian people, freed of Fascist and Nazi overlordship for the past twelve' months, have demonstrated their will to be free to fight on the side of the democracies and to take a place among the United Nations.
"We, believe we should give encouragement to those Italians who are standing for a political rebirth in Italy and are completing the destruction of its Fascist system. We wish to afford the Italians a greater opportunity to aid in the defeat of our common enemies. The American and British peoples are, of course, horrified by the recent mob action in Rome, but feel that greater responsibility placed on the Italian people and its Government will most readily prevent a recurrence of such acts. An increasing measure of control will be gradually handed over to the Italian administration providing it can maintain law and order and the regular administration of justice. ■ ;
"Therefore a change will be necessary in the name of the Allied Control Commission, which will be renamed the Allied Commission, and the British High Commissioner,' Sir Noel Charles, will assume the title of Ambassador. The United States representive is already holding that rank. The Italian Government will be invited to appoint direct representatives to London and Washington."
The statement stresses the necessity for sending further medical and food supplies to Italy and the restoration of Italian economy, and' also states that for military reasons we should assist the Italians in the restoration of such power systems, railway and motor transport, roads, and other communications as enter into the war situation. —8.0.
