"UNITY FOR STABLE PEACE"
Sir, —Under the above caption in Tuesday's "Post", a correspondent, "H.J.E.," takes exception to my remarks in praise of Russia's magnificent contribution to the common task of defeating the Nazi attempt to achieve world domination, a well-deserved tribute paid by way of reply to certain belittling references to our great ally. My exact wording was taken from a speech: by Henry Wallace, Vice-Pre-sident of the United States, and the full text is as follows:—"From north, south, east, ancfe west, Americans pay tribute to our' Russian ally. It is right that we should dp so, The Russians have thus far lost in the common cause of the United Nations at least 50 per cent, more men killed wounded, and missing than all the rest of the European Allies 'put together. Moreover, they have killed, wounded, and captured at least twenty times as many Germans as have the rest of the Allies. In all of Russian history, there is no more striking examples of courage and willingness to sacrifice than' Russia ■presents today."
The full speech may be found in the book entitled "The Century of the Common Man."
"H.J.E.".must have a queer outlook if he can see in this well-earned tribute to our Russian ally any reflection on the Motherland, from which nearly 98 per cent, of New Zealanders are proud to claim origin, and who are equally proud of the Old Country's heroic stand alone in the early days of the war, and of the equally outstanding contribution she continues to make as to which your journal bears daily testimony.—l am, etc., HARRY ATMORE. Parliamentarj' Buildings, Wellington, September 26, 1944. .
