Ward) reported at a meeting of the committee yesterday afternoon that £83,000 was in hand- towards the : metropolitan patriotic quota of £87,876,' and he expected that by the end of this month the full. figure would be reached.
The net proceeds of the North Island v: South island Services Rugby match, which are to be devoted to patriotic purposes, were stated to be ■£577.j It was also reported that since the opening of the patriotic shop in Manners Street last month over' £900 had been raised. The street day held.by the Wellington Trades Council last Friday in aid of patriotic funds realised £801 14s 6d.
In reference to a reported statement that the Allied Services Club was showing a profit, it was explained that this did not give the true position, as no rental or other overhead expenses had been taken into account. The average attendances at weekends had also been wrongly stated as 200, the actual figure being about 2000. Appreciative reference was made to the work of the voluntary helpers at this club and the A.N.A. Club.
Mr. Ward reported that each of the men from the Wellington1 metropolitan area who had returned in the last furlough draft had been given a letter of invitation to a reception and social at the Ngati-Poneke Hall. They had also been guests with friends at various picture theatres, and all facilities had been made available to them at the A.N.A. Club. Woollen comforts had been supplied, where necessary, by the patriotic depot. Entertainment had also been provided for the ship's company and others on board.
