BLOCKING OF SPEZIA
HARBOUR
' LONDON, September 24. Todays communique from Italy states that as a result of recent Allied successes, the Germans have been forced to abandon the whole of their prepared positions in the Gothic Line except in the sector west of Futa Pass, on the threshold of which American troops of the Fifth Army are now engaged.
. The Germans arc trying to block the harbour at Spezia, a naval base which is now only a few miles from the Allied positions, says the British United Press correspondent in Italy The Germans placed the Italian cruiser Taranto to block the harbour. Three formations of Mitchells bombed the port today. The Mitchells heavily hit the Taranto, which was burning when the bombers turned for home, and subsequent observations show that she is submerged.
INSTRUCTIONS TO PATRIOTS
LONDON, September 24. Rome radio has broadcast instructions from the Allied high command to patriots operating in the northern Alps and also in the Po Valley. "This is the moment to strike and turn the enemy's retreat into a rout," declared the broadcast. .
