BIG FIRES STARTED (By Telegraph—Press Association —uopyrl.ht.) LONDON, July 26. Stuttgart Avas again the main objective for R.A.F. bombers Avhich were over Germany last night in great strength. The attack lasted about a quarter of an hour and started large fires. Other heavy bombers attacked a synthetic oil plant at Wanneickel, in the Ruhr. Mosquitoes ivhich attacked Berlin dropped many 40001b bombs. The bombers had to battle their Avay over Europe through severe electrical storms and against fighter opposition. Stuttgart, the CoA'entry of Germany, is irregular in outline, which makes it a difficult target, which Avould require more than one raid to dispose of its industries. Bremen and Mannheim were also raided. Thirteen bombers are missing. The pilot of a reconnaissance aircraft reported seeing a large volume of smoke irom fires Avhich Avere still burning in Stuttgart at about 2 p.m. today, tAvelve hours' after the R.A.F. Bomber Command's heavy attack last night. The Air Ministry states that enemy fuel dumps on the outskirts of Alencon were bombed by a stronge force of Mitchells and Bostons of the R.A.F. this morning. Spitfires Avhich escort- ' ed the bombers shot doAvn four of a force of over 30 Melo9's and Fwl9o's which tried to intercept. All our aircraft returned safely. Today's communique from Allied headquarters in Italy says that ; medium forces of heavy bombers under escort yesterday attacked the ; Hermann Goering tank Avorks at Linz, Austria. Other heavy bombers hit railway yards at Villach. Tactical aircraft ranged over north i Italy, and also over the battle area . and Yugoslavia, striking at railway bridges, roads, transport, shipping, and • other enemy installations. Sixty-five enemy planes were destroyed in these operations. Tiventy- ; six of ours are missing. i The Hermann Goering tank Avorks, . lA'hich are designed to produce 1,000,----i 000 tons of iron and steel yearly and manufacture tanks and armoured cars, are uncompleted. They were bombed for the first time yesterday.
