U.S. PLANES IN BATTLE
Rec. 11 a.m. RUGBY, July 26. Lightnings and Mustangs operating from American bases in the U.S.S.R. have taken part in the battle for the first time on the Soviet-German front. They attacked in the Lwow area and destroyed 38 enemy planes besides attacking other targets, it is officially announced, says a Moscoiv message. Headquarters of the Eastern • Command state that no American planes are missing. Twenty-nine of the enemy planes were shot down. They include 26 Juß7's which were returning from a bombing attack. The Americans strafed Mielec aerodrome on the River Yislok 100 miles north-Avest of Lwow, and also attacked highway and rail communications. —8.0.W.
