£135 FOR ORPHANAGES

MRS. FRASER OPENS FETE

All of the 1500 people who, attended the garden party at "Homewood," Karori, on Saturday, spent a delightful afternoon in Mr. and Mrs. B. Sutherland's beautiful gardens, and with their support enriched the funds of the Presbyterian Orphanages and Special Service Association by approximately £135.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) and Mrs. Fraser, who opened the fete, were received by Mrs. R. Tait, president of the P.S.S.A. Women's Auxiliary, and Mrs. H. S. Cross, wife of the association's superintendent and secretary. Mrs. Fraser, who was introduced by Mr. Cross, appealed for the numerous visitors for-generous support. Many fine young people who had been brought up in the homes, she said, were now serving their country. The association, in providing such homes and spiritual training for children in need, was carrying out a great work. Four-year-old Pamela Stokes, the youngest member of the girls' home, presented Mrs. Fraser with a bouquet. Stalls for sweets, afternoon tea, and produce had been erected on the lower lawn, and stall-holders had a busy time coping with a steady, stream of patrons. Appropriately, in a money-raising effort for the church and children, none of the sum raised was derived from raffles. Guests found much to engage their interest, particularly in watching the demonstration given in the swimming, pool by Mrs. Ijah McCabe, official coach to the Wellington Primary School Swimming and Life-saving Association, who was assisted by a team of girls. Mr. G. C. Reed, education officer of the Wellington Centre N.Z.A.S.A., acted as commentator. The Caledonian Pipe Band provided excellent music, and the association's women auxiliary, assisted by young men and women from Bible classes .throughout the Wellington district, served tea and refreshments. .
