TIGHTENING TO
SPEED AND TYRE LIMITS
A general tightening up in the enforcement of the speeding and tyre loading restrictions imposed on motorvehcile owners with the object of conserving tyres was announced last night by the Minister of Transport (Mr. O'Brien).
"Reports from the Transport Department indicate that the speed restriction of 40 miles per hour on all cars and tyre-load limits on commercial vehicles imposed last year as a measure for conserving tyres are not being satisfactorily observed," said the Minister. He added that there had been a considerable number of prosecutions for breaches of the speed-limit, but that comparatively few prosecutions had been taken for breaches of the tyre loading provisions.
"The general rubber position makes it essential that we should conserve our existing supplies of tyres to the utmpst and this cannot be, done if general speeding and overloading take place," said Mr. O'Brien. "I have therefore instructed the Commissioner' of Transport that there is ,to be a general tightening up in the enforce^ ment of both the speeding and tyre? loading restrictions." ' /-
