CASSINO BATTLE

GERMAN WITHDRAWAL

FORWARD DEFENCE LINE

LOJSTDON, January 10. The Germans have withdrawn the bulk of their forces from the forward defences' covering Cassino on the Fifth Army front in Italy. ; In the last 24 hours British and 'American troops have made • advances of up to one and a half miles on either side of the road to Cassino.- Patrols pressing along the road have found abandoned German rifles and machineguns. It is thought that the Germans will now concentrate on holding the last obstacle before the Allied troops, a 1500 ft peak on the south side of the road which dominates all approaches to Cassino from the south and east.
