STEWART ISLAND FERRY
P.A. INVERCARGILL, December 17. While conveying a party of school children from Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island, to Ulva Island, in Paterson Inlet, yesterday the Bluff-Stewart Island ferry steamer Orewa experienced trouble with the steering gear, with the result that she went aground on the rocky part of the shore. Eventually she was refloated, and proceeded under her own steam'to Half Moon Bay, where today she was beached. An examination, it is reported, did not disclose any structural damage to the hull, though the rudder and propeller have beea damaged. The vessel will not be able to return to the Bluff until she has been. inspected by the Marine Department's representative, who will authorise "her journey to the Bluff, where the necessary repairs can be effected. An inquiry into the cause of the mishap has already been commenced. No person was injured. Arrangements have been made to carry on the ferry service.
