LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
MONEY FOR SEAMEN
Sir,—On receiving a cable from my son in the Merchant Service giving me a club address to write to in Liverpool, I thought, here is a chance to send him £5 for Christmas. (He is not yet 17 and this will be his second Christmas at sea.) On going to the Post Office I was told I could not send money without a permit, which would take seven days to get through, so by the time the cable reached him he would be at sea again and it would be months before I would hear from him again. I think the Reserve Bank should bring the Merchant Seamen in line with other servicemen, especially considering they have to buy all their own gear and have no travelling concessions. England allows seamen to send money without any restrictions. —I am, etc., MOTHER.
