TURNED THE SCALE

SERVICEMEN'S VOTES

MORE ELECTION COUNTS

Final counts of civilian votes which, had been completed and notified to the Chief Electoral Officer (Mr. L.. Irwin) by noon today showed that there were already "four seats in which the National candidates' lead was lost oh the known Services' votes. These four seats—Oamaru, Otaki, Wairarapa, and Motueka—are almost certain to be retained by sitting members.

The civilian voting in the Wairarapa electorate (which includes the Silver-stream-Heretaunga - Trentham - Upper Hutt area) gave the National candidate (Mr. Maher) a, majority of 87, but on the preliminary count of Service votes the Labour candidate (Mr. Roberts) takes the lead by 124. In Eden the National candidate (Lieut-Colonel-Fortune), with an advantage of 254 on civilian.voting, still holds the lead with the preliminary Service count included, though it is reduced to 12. The Nelson National candidate (Lieut-Colonel Huggins) polled 100 more civilian votes than the Independent (Mr. Atmore), who was unopposed by Labour, but that lead is more than offset by the Service voting, as has been shown to be the case-in Oamaru and Otaki. - It is expected that declarations of the poll willbe made early next week, as by then the returning officers will have received notification from the Chief Electoral Officer of the official counts of Service votes in hand. The following returns show the final civilian voting totals together with the result of., the preliminary Service count: — , Wellington West. Civilian Prelim. Present Final. Service.. Total.
