CANDIDATES

The selection of official Labour candidates for the four Maori electorates has been announced as follows by the national secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party (Mr. M. Moohan):— Southern Maori.—The sitting member, the Hon. E. T. Tirikatene, member of the Executive Council representing the Maori race. Western Maori.—The sitting member, Mr. H. T. Ratana. Northern Maori.—Mr. Tapihana Paraire Paikea, the only son of the late Hon. P. K. Paikea. He is 23 years of age, is married, and was educated at the Wanganui Technical College. In addition to farming experience, Mr. Paikea was for some three years employed in the office of the Maori Advisory Council of the New Zealand Labour Party and later was a member of the staff of the Native Department. He volunteered for service over-seas-at the outbreak of war and on two occasions since, but was rejected as medically unfit for military service. , Eastern Maori.—Mr. Jack Ormond (Tiaki Omana), of Mania, Wairoa, Hawke's Bay. Mr. Ormond, who is a prominent sheepfarmer, was educated at Wairoa and at Christ's College, Canterbury. He is a returned soldier oi the last war and is well known in the football and athletic world. ,Mr. Ormond is married with a family. Waipawa.—Mr. Archie Low, of Hastings, has been selected as the Labour candidate for the Waipawa seat. An orchardist and apiarist, Mr. Low has been farming in the district for 27 years. He has been a member of the Hastings Borough Council and has served on the executive of the Hawkes Bay Farmers' Union. A lifelong supporter of the Labour Party, Mr. Low has held many executive positions m the party.
