GERMAN NAVAL BASE

DAMAGE BY U.S. BOMBERS

Rec. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, July 9. Reconnaissance photographs show that vital buildings were hit in the naval base of Wilhelmshaven during the daylight attack by United States Eighth Air Force heavy bombers on June 11.

Bombs were dropped along the whole length of the harbour. The Marine Werst ship-building yard, where up to 13 submarines can be built at one time, was one of the targets, and the assembly shop was severely hit, an area of 2500 square yards being damaged. Two adjacent buildings were also struck by highexplosive bombs, and other buildings were severely damaged, while many bombs fell elsewhere on the naval docks. Mine-sweeping depots on the adjacent island were severely bombed, and several buildings were hit near the torpedo-boat harbour used by smaller naval vessels, while barracks and a drill house were also pounded and several oil storage tanks were wiped out. On this mission Flying Fortresses destroyed 85 enemy fighters, losing I eight bombers.—B.O.W.
