CONVERSION OF CARS

SOLDIERS IN COURT

(0.C.) PALMERSTON N., This Day.

"The conversion of cars is becoming * scandal. In fact, the behaviour of a good; many soldiers is becoming a scandal. They appear to think they can do as they like." -.This comment was made by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.Mi, in the Palmerstori North Magistrate's Court when Robert Gordon Haggart, a soldier, pleaded guilty to a charge of converting an Army car to his own use. When the police stated that the accused drove the car out of a camp, the Magistrate wanted to know how. he got past the guard. The explanation was that the car belonged to a general and was not usually challenged. Haggart was sent to gaol for three ') months.

Giovanni Joseph Betti and Benjamin Richard Aylward, soldiers, who converted an Army car, which ran off the jnad at Waikanae, injuring an overseas serviceman, were dealt with similarly. '■""■ ;'■ ••"''••.■'■■•■■■ " ■ ,■•■"■■ '■■'■/■' .
