U-BOAT BASES RAIDED
R.A.F. AND AMERICAN
PLANES
LONDON, January 24. In the war against the U-boats, R.A.F. night bombers .attacked Lorient only a few hours alter American-manned Fortresses had attacked it in daylight. The attack was all over in 20 minutes, but in that period a great weight of high-explosive and incendiary bombs was dropped. Lorient is now one of the enemy s most imporant bases for attacks on our shipping, and it has room for 20 or 30 submarines. The Germans claim they have made it bombproof, and it is true that their submarines find shelter under 15 feet or more of reinforced concrete, but there are plenty of vulnerable targets which are necessary to' maintain the U-boats and make them ready to go to sea. Lorient has now been bombed by the R.A.F. at least 50 times. ' While last night's attack w.as going on a force of our four-engined bombers was out over western Germany. The night raids cost us three aircraft.
