BRILLIANT RECORD

TRANQUIL STAR'S CAREER

(By "Binocular.")

Tranquil Star, winner of the W. S. Cox Plate at the Moonee Valley Meeting in Australia on Saturday, is a striking example of a horse making good despite the indifferent career on the Turf on the part of the dam. Lone Star, the dam, was by Great Star from Saucy Sue, and the beet she, could do under silk was a second in a mile event at Bittern. Her racing career was somewhat limited; she figured only once as a two-year-old, raced seven times at three years, and twice in the following term, which furnished her one very modest stake contribution. Mated with Gay Lothario, a son of Gay Crusader, winner of the English Derby and St. Leger, Lone Star produced Tranquil Star, and the filly early showed that she would go much further than her dam.

Paid Her Way. —As a two-year-old Tranquil Star won the Ottawa Stakes at the Melbourne' Cup Meeting of 1940. having as her pilot in her initial success the former New Zealander M. McCarten, and she later added the Juvenile Handicap at Williamstown. In the following term she built up a fine -record, scoring over varying distances from a mile to a mile and threequarters. Town Hall Company. —After winning the Edward Manifold Stakes. 1 mile, a race for fillies, at Randwick early in her three-year-old career, Tranquil Star tried conclusions with High Caste. Beaulivre, and other high-class performers, with a goodly measure of success. In the St. George Stakes, 9 furlongs, at the V.A.T.C. 'Meeting in February 1941. she beat High Caste and Dashing Cavalier, with Beaulivre unplaced, when in receipt of 141b Again when they clashed in the Chipping Norton Stakes. 1£ miles, at Warwick Farm,1 Tranquil Star beat High Caste. Beau Vite, and company at a difference of 101b, and she accounted for that other good one. Lucrative, in the V.R.C. St. Leger and A.J.C. Cumberland Plate, both 13-mile races. In the Flemington event Tranquil Star won by five lengths in 2min 59isec, and her winning margin at Randwick was eight lengths. The time, however, was 3min 133 sec on a slow track.

Raced In Cup.— Last November Tranquil Star contested the Melbourne Cup Weighted at 8.9, she was responsible for the early .pace, but stopped and was the last to finish. For some time thereafter her form slumped, but she returned to the winning list in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes at Flemington, when she beat Beaulivre, Skipton (the Melbourne Cup winner), and Mildura over U miles with 8.11: On that occasion "she was in receipt of 61b from Beaulivre and Mildura, but gave Skipton 91b. Still later she took a division of the Alister Clark Stakes. 1 mile, at Moonee Valley, with 8.8 on her back, running the distance in i|sec faster than the winner of the other division. . No Complimentaries.— For thenmeeting at Otaki later in the month the stewards of the Levin Racing Club intend making a flat charge of 2s 6d per head, irrespectiye of sex. for admission. There will be no complimentary tickets. Rumours Busy. —Rumour is already busy concerning Kindergarten's trip to Riccarton. It has been stated that the Kincardine horse will not contest the New Zealand Cup, but will be reserved for the Canterbury Cup. However, little credence can be placed in the reports. Strong Field.— The King George Handicap, the principal event at the Avondale Meeting on Saturday, has drawn 16 prospective runners. The occasion will probably mark Beau Leon's return to distance racing, his two outings this term having been in sprint events. Also figuring in the field are Landveyor and Ascot Bloom, who ran third and eighth respectively in the Wellington Handicap last month, and Clinch, who. although on the scene, did not go through with his engagements at Trentham. Suspended.— A message from Melbourne states that H. Badger has been suspended for one month. Consequently, it will be necessary for another rider to be secured for Pandect in the Melbourne Cup. and for Great Britain in the Derby, unless there is a successful appeal. At Avondalc— The Matamata horseman E V. Dye will return to race riding at the Avondale Meeting on Saturday. His mounts will include Hogarth, Belle Renarde, Lulu Boy, and ValGoing North.— The Trentham jockeys N Vaughan and J. Garth will attend the Avondale Meeting on Saturday. Garth will.ride Transmitter and Transcend for J. H. Eva. . . Increased Weight. — Originally weighted at 8.10 in this years Melbourne Cup, Tranquil Star had her poundage increased to 9 3 as a result of her win in the Caulfteld Stakes, a weight-for-age event, and last Saturday she added the W. S Cox Plate, another 9-furlong event, with the same poundage of 8.13. It is interesting to note that whereas Pandect, runnerup in the Cox Plate, had 9.4 on Saturday he comes in at 8.13 in the Melbourne Cup, and the third horse, Leahero, drops from 7.11 to 7.1. Despite her splendid record the indications are that Tranquil Star is over brilliant to run out a solid two-mile race.
