JAPANESE RETREATING
GUADALCANAL WAR
PLANES POUND ENEMY
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) (ReC-2-15^HINGTON, Nov. 2. The Japanese are retreating slowly westward from the American airfield on Guadalcanal after an attack in which a small force of marines, supported by heavy bombers, crossed the Matanikau River and advanced two miles.
The latest Navy Department communique says the action occurred on Sunday. The Americans suffered comparatively few casualties. United States fighters and divebombers attacked the enemy positions on Guadalcanal throughout the day, silencing Japanese artillery. On Friday four Zero fighters were shot down by Grumman Wildcats without loss to our planes. There was no ground activity during the day or on Saturday.
On Sunday,. American fighters attacked enemy positions at Rekata Bay, starting fires and destroying five grounded enemy planes. Intense antiaircraft fire was encountered, but all our planes returned.
