CRICKET

SEASON'S OPENING

CENTURY BY RICE

Althougli the afternoon turned out brilliantly fine for the opening 'of- tbe cricket season on Saturday, conditions did not altogether favour the batsmen. There were several fine individual batting performances, but in the main scores in the senior grade were low, with bowlera ln many cases turning in good figures. I'lay was most exciting in the match between. Institute Old Boye and University, in which runs were in good supply. University made a bold bid to top their .opponents' tidy score of 210, and, with two wickets in hand, were only four runs short of success when stumps * wer,e drawn. Ono outright win was' scored —by ' Wellington College Old Boye. Leading the way amongst the batsmen: ..was H. F. Rice, who carried his bat through Kllbirnie's innings for the flrst century of the season. His 104 was a flrst-class effort. Browne (W.C.0.8.), Ormiston.and: Rogere (Institute O.B.). Stringer, Wilson, and Beard (University), Otway (Army). Ongley (St. Pat's ! College O.B.). Willis (Petone), and Mustard, Bennett, and Dickinson (Hutt) were others who did well. A. W. Duncan (a former Wellington selector) took a fine bag of wickets at small cost—six for 19—-with bis left-arm deliveries, and Jupp (St. Pat's O.B.), Menzies (Midland- Wellington), and Dumbleton (Afmy).i a former Kilbirnie colt who has since played! at Duntroon and in Auckland, each took .five wickets in an innings, with G. h. Whyte bag-' ging sis in two innings at short price. Others to do well included Reynolds, (W.C.0'8.), \ Smith (Air Fofce), Partner (School of.
