WEEK'S GROCERIES
DELIVERY CURTAILMENTS
(G.c.) Auckland, sfeptember 28. Drastic curtailmeht of grbcei-y deliveries is envisaged in recommendations sutiinitted last week by the Mastel- Gi-ocers* F&dei-'atibh to the Commissibher ot Transport, Mr. Laurensoii. Thesfe hdw await the approval of the Minister of Transport (Mi-. Serhple)* aitd if they are endorsed \Vill cohie irttb operation immediately. This federation suggested that throughout, the Dominion customers in cities and boroughs, including builtup areas adjacent to their boundaries* should be entitled to one delivery a week to each house of parcels only exceeding 81b in weight or 5 cubic feet in bulk. Fdr the country districts it was su'g- j gested that no storekeeper shall deliver to any point exceeding a five- j mile radius from his shop if such a point is beyond the1 shortest distance from any other storekeeper who is able and willing to supply the consumer so situated. Country deliveries also should be restricted to one a week, excepting in cases where bread comprises a substantial portion of the business. Two weekly deliveries would be permitted in such instances. The scheme is intended to apply till June 30 next, to all forms of conveyance* and in addition to the restrictions proposed all existing petrol licences are expected to be reviewed. The grocers were guided in drafting a plan for the city and borough areas by what lias been done in Australia, though the minimum weight suggested for New Zealand is con^ siderably higher than that agreed to for the Commonwealth.
