PURCHASE OF CLASS COLT
In the autumn of 1940 an Irish trainer, J. Collins, who won the Irish Derby with Windsor Slipper, invited a friend in England to inspect and report upon a certain number of yearlings which, in his opinion, held out great promise. In due course the English friend was commissioned to step into the market for certain youngsters, and thus was brought about the presence in Eire of Windsor Slipper and several other high-grade winners in the colours of Mr. McGrath, the stable patron, who was the actual buyer. Windsor Slipper was bred at the Gilltown Stud, Dorset, by the late Lord Furness, and, encouraged by the promise shown by Windsor Slipper, Mr. McGrath later bought the dam, Carpet Slipper, for 14,000g5. She has since foaled a filly by Hyperion (a full-sister to Godiva), and is in foal to Bois Roussel. In June Windsor Slipper won the Irish Derby in hollow fashion, despite showing greenness in the running, and was due to contest the Irish St. Leger this month. It was the intention to then retire him to the stud, where he will take up duty next year.
