POWER FAILURE
■♦
CAUSED BY LIGHTNING
The power failure yesterday afternoon was caused by an electrical storm near Bunnythorpe, said an , official of the hydro branch of the Public Works Department. In consequence of a flashover the safety devices came into operation and switches opened. Both Arapuni and Waikaremoana "came apart" and Mangahao was left with the whole of the hydro load south of Bunnythorpe. This station carried on for a few minutes, but then also dropped out because of the heavy overload. Evans Bay was asked to come in at full capacity, and steps were taken immediately to restore the general service. The interruption lasted for about thirty minutes, but in Wellington tramway power, which passes through a second set of machines which convert alternating into direct current, was off for about ten minutes longer.
