NEW JAPANESE COMMANDER

(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 17. Tokio radio quoted a War Office announcement that Lieutenant-General Jun Ushiroku, former Chief of Staff to the China forces, has been appointed Commander-in-Chief of Central Defence Headquarters in Japan and promoted general.

The "Asahi Shimbun" commented on the appointment as significant, and said it showed the increased importance of defence of the mother country, especially the east coast, since the first phase of the war operations in Asia had ended.

Lieutenant-General Shozo Kawabe, Assistant Inspector of Military Education, has succeeded General Ushiroku in the China post.
